Balance on Hidden Weight-

English 原文
A flat oval stone rocked on Kent’s palm, one edge rising while the other pressed against skin. The nearby cluster of earlier towers formed a humble exhibition of balance, five layers high yet trembling in the breeze. Kent aimed to add a fifth layer, still the oval leaned the moment his fingers withdrew. He had carried the stone from the waterline, where water had rubbed one face almost glossy. Now that side dried slowly into gritty matte patches along the rim. During his first attempt he lowered it heavy-side up; rough grains gripped for a moment before the stack rocked and the top slid off. Not discouraged, he let both hands collaborate: right thumb braced the tower’s spine while left knuckles nudged the stone clockwise. The shift looked briefly secure until a gust swept across the open water, pushing at the stack. The loaded side dipped, scattering two pebbles onto crunchy gravel.
The tower held four layers; the gap begged for closure, and his fingertips read the oval’s weight like a scale. Instead of lowering it at once, he rotated it a quarter turn, feeling for the denser side through ridges. His posture stayed low, shoulders square; the repeated motions produced a stacking mindset in his muscles, slow and exact. Gravity then found the hidden imbalance; the stack tipped again but stopped after only a shallow sway. The slight lean pressed rough face to rough face and somehow created a surprisingly favorable outcome. The column now leaned into the cool river wind instead of away, anchoring itself like a flagstone door propped open. Just then, a taller tower beside Cora collapsed; one stone bounced over gritty surface and struck Kent’s base. A palm-sized pebble from the spill now wedged under the foundation, lifting one corner by the thickness of a coin.
