English 原文
Smooth, wet granite cooled Felix's palm as he pressed a broad base stone into the gravel. The slab scraped over smaller pebbles with a gritty sigh, then stilled under its own weight. Waves slapped behind him in a steady rhythm, and each gust sent a low whistle through the loose gaps between rocks. Near his boots, a hermit crab tapped along, its tiny shell knocking stones like a toy drum. Felix hoped to raise a five-layer stack on this wind-exposed patch, echoing the taller tower upstream—an architectural marvel of quiet craftsmanship that still hummed whenever the breeze slipped through it. He lifted a narrow driftwood stick, ready to nudge every layer into place.
The first addition was a flat slate chip; it landed on the base with a muted plonk. He guided it with the stick until both surfaces murmured against each other and stopped vibrating. Wanting extra height, he fetched a second chip from the dry pile. It touched down with a sharper crack, and the upper piece began to oscillate in tiny arcs, ticking like a slow metronome. The wind sighed again; sand hissed along the ground; pebbles rolled underfoot. Thinking weight would calm the wobble, Felix slid a third, thicker stone on top. The pile answered with a brittle chitter, then swayed wider. Even the hermit crab paused, antennae flicking while loose grains pattered down from the overstressed layers.
He crouched, listening to the uneven beat of the stack. Each swing grew louder, throwing staccato knocks into the cooling air. Felix spotted the middle chip—the second addition—shining too smooth for good grip. In one sure motion he pinched its edge and pulled. The thin slate slipped free with a clean scrape, and the stones above dropped a finger’s width, landing with a deep, pleasing thud. Only the river’s hollow slap and a distant gull’s croak remained. Twilight stretched across the water, and amber glints flashed on the wet surfaces as the breeze faded to a low murmur. Felix traced the tower’s steady hush once more, then slid the driftwood stick onto a flat, silent stone beside his feet.
