English 原文
A dry scrape dragged across the flattened grass, then paused. A tall teacher knelt beyond the slope, finishing a thin chalk ring on the sunlit patch below; the distance had been measured by her earlier that morning. Leander stood beside the folding bench higher up the incline, holding a blank sheet whose edges still kept the stiffness of novelty. The goal was clear: land a single plane inside that pale ring, twelve paces away. He creased the sheet along its grain; each fold whispered like tearing silk, and the plane took shape with crisp blue-grey lines catching daylight. First throw: the nose dipped early, skimming five paces short, dew darkening its tip. The partial gain showed itself—distance counted but not enough. Damp fibres now sagged at the point, presenting a fresh dilemma before the second attempt.
He laid the damp plane on a flat stone used for adjustments. Without tools, he pinched the leading edge upward by a finger’s width, adapting the angle. A gust from the left leaned the ribbon tied to the stick; if that breeze stayed, the plane would drift right. The second launch began smooth; silver paper edges hissed, and the craft glided seven paces, dying two paces short of the ring. Progress, yet the threshold still held. Only one untouched sheet remained on the bench. He had practised basic folds last week, so the method was already settled in his mind. The fresh sheet, lighter after losing a sliver torn away for balance, promised one last chance. Two narrow wingtip curls were added; the total mass stayed low, but lift should combine with the previous angle change.
Leander climbed back to the launch spot. He drew breath, then released the final plane. The wings caught a new cross-draft; the craft sliced the air, sailed through the chalk ring in eerie silence, and kept rising. Beyond the target lay a line of slender cypress trees that bordered the caretaker’s small courtyard. The plane cleared their bluish crowns, clipped a twig, and drifted down onto the shingled roof of the stone cottage inside the yard. Success had arrived yet slipped forward, leaving him to jog downhill toward the gate.
At the same hour, on the opposite edge of the field, Owen gathered earlier flights into a neat stack; one bent nose still glimmered with dew under the cooling shade.
