Chalk Dust on the Bamboo Bridge-

English 原文
Tok-tok chords rolled through the grove as Keane's wooden mallet struck the fallen bamboo bridge again. Each note drifted under the canopy, yet wind gusts rubbed distant culms together, weaving a rough drumroll. Keane aimed to find one bright, jaunty pitch for their small school play, and time was already running. He vaulted the shallow ditch, balancing on the green trunk, and tapped near its centre with gentle rhythm. The culm answered too low; he waited for the wind to fade and tried closer to the thicker end. That spot carried clearer resonance, so Dinah marked it with chalk, though rattling leaves blurred the lingering tone.
A sudden, harsher rustle behind them abruptly interrupted their careful cycle of strike and listen. Their lunch bag, forgotten on the gravel, had been tugged open by that same gust. A small tin of sardine pieces spun along the path, clinking against trunks as it slid toward the grove edge. Keane jumped down, crunching gravel, and chased the runaway tin, the racket drowning every bamboo voice around him. Dinah followed; during this noisy intermission the fallen bridge remained alone, rocked slightly by uneven breeze.
When they returned, the bridge had rolled half a turn, so the white chalk stripe now faced the ground. The movement also shifted its inner tension, raising every note by a half-step and erasing their earlier plan. Keane listened between shorter gusts, then adjusted his timing: he tapped only during the brief hush after each sway. He inched along and remarked fresh stripes, each stroke using another crumb of chalk from Dinah’s dwindling stub. At the final hush, he struck the new centre mark; the culm answered with one clear, jaunty ring. The chalk fragment crumbled to powder on that final stroke, leaving bare fingers and the finished pattern glowing pale.
