Each step toward the fort interior gave a crisp crunch, then changed to a soft hush once she crossed the low wall. The entrance gap still yawned almost two hand-spans wide; three tight bricks would close it. She carefully pushed the first block into position beside the leaning edge of the opening. It landed with a muted bump and a thin squeak of compressed ice, adding one short row but leaving daylight above. Joel, proud self-styled entrepreneur of yard projects, packed more snow like inventory, claiming he could negotiate any shortage. The particulars of his promise mattered less than the brick itself, so Winona stretched her flexible wrist and returned for another mould.

Outside the wall, she scooped wetter snow from the fence drift with the wide shovel. Its metal throat gave a low rasp each time it bit into the packed layer. She packed the second brick, flipped the mould, and a hollow thud echoed as the block dropped beside her boot. She patted the edges smooth until a faint crunch answered under the mould rim lightly. A robin on the fence jerked upward, wings beating in a sharp flutter that shook snow toward the bucket. The snow cakes struck the ice skin; it cracked with a brittle snap and sent a splash that slapped both gloves. Joel laughed, but the cold water soaked through, forcing Winona to maneuver her fingers stiffly around the mould. Still, the second brick joined the first, leaving only one more gap that the wind whistled through like a narrow flute.

She carried the mould back once more and scooped an extra load of fence snow. Joel tipped a thin ribbon of bucket water along the fresh block, the liquid hissing where it touched loose grains. The third brick wedged above the other two; the doorway edges gripped it in silence, and the pale band of sky vanished. Fresh snow kept falling, but she slid the bucket onto the porch step, blocking any further splash from startled birds. A low rumble rolled through the wall as the new arch stiffened, then the sounds thinned to the faint drift of flakes. Winona leaned the empty mould against the inner wall, and a clear drop slid along its rim toward the packed floor.
