Nina pressed her knee into the gritty drift, packing a ring of snowballs that glowed amber where low sunlight touched them. Flakes had fused into a sticky blanket under the mild noon glare, so each squeeze drew a sharp squeal. Guiding arcs had been carefully traced in the powder earlier by an old garden rake. When she lifted one snowball onto the growing dome, the inner wall sagged, showing a hair-thin crack that travelled downward. She stayed with her first plan: another ball, pressed gently, would thicken that weak spot before ice could harden it. A sliding patch of sun felt like an oasis, yet cold air kept her breath white.

She lined a dozen bright balls along the genuine cedar board, their caramel edges catching the slanting sun. Weight gathered at the middle as the plank slowly dipped a finger-width; gravity set the first ball rolling. That ball knocked its neighbour, which bumped the dome’s base and hissed through the hollow. Nina raised the board’s far edge, halting the parade before more spheres joined the tumble. The same weakened patch inside the lantern bowed again, yet she slid the shovel’s flat face under the curve and held steady. If the next ball fit poorly, the arch would lean, so she turned each sphere a half-circle before pressing it in place. Over the cedar fence, a young entrepreneur clinked bottles, yet the sharper rhythm rose from snow squealing under Nina’s gloves. Nina leaned the shovel against the fence, and the cedar board rocked once, sliding a whisper of powder toward the lantern.
