English 原文
Half the coffee machine’s clear reservoir gleamed with water, while the top third still displayed dry ridges. Reed, a sixteen-year-old intern, braced the plastic pitcher against his mid-section; the hard rim pressed into his shirt and reminded him to keep both elbows steady. He tilted slowly, shoulders tightening, and a firm ribbon poured inside. A tiny wrist slip sent a thin sheet across the lid, cold drops flicking his knuckles. The splash wandered over the laminate, drifting toward a low shelf that carried spare mugs and a bright green mantis figurine. Static hummed in the carpet under his sneakers as he shifted weight. That ornament had been placed there by the office decorator. Reed tore off one paper towel, pressed it flat against the flow, and tried to finish filling, yet another spill slipped underneath and tapped his shoe.
He refilled the pitcher and widened his stance, knees slightly bent, calf muscles tensing to anchor him. This time the pour seemed calmer, yet stray droplets still escaped, ran behind the machine, and gathered in a slow reunion at the dangling plug. The tiny pool crawled along the power cord, lost height, and dripped onto the tiles. Cool water kissed Reed’s ankle, then stretched toward Ben, who sorted envelopes two steps away. Ben’s heel brushed the damp cord; the sudden tug tipped the mantis from the shelf. Plastic feet clicked once against porcelain, and the figurine bumped a coaster printed with an adorable puppy licking a giant spoon, an image soaked in quiet affection. Coaster and insect skated together, spinning through the puddle until they reached Reed’s foot and left a cold band around his sock. He drew a striped dish towel from a drawer, folded it twice, and wedged it beneath the reservoir lip so the cotton drank the leaking thread of water. Reed then laid the darkening towel over the sink rim; moisture kept seeping through its fibres toward the waiting steel drain.
