The Bottle That Slipped-

English 原文
Ben balanced the full water bottle against his hip while warm air drifted through the corridor. Fluorescent strips buzzed; their pale light flickered across dust that floated like tiny seeds. Outside the nearest window, rooftops cut a jagged skyline, yet the pair’s outlook toward the river was hidden behind steamed-up glass. The old elevator had been marked "out of service" since dawn, so replacing the cooler upstairs fell to their arms alone. A white ring, once a boat’s lifesaver, now cushioned the bottle’s neck; plastic rope held it steady. The thin nylon between their gloved hands turned into an awkward interpersonal connection, more stubborn than any handshake.
Stairs began, narrow and uneven. Ben had shifted his grip, yet condensation still slid along his forearm. "Slow," he said, the word short and flat. They climbed two steps before the cap cracked, letting water spit across shoes. If they had left the bottle downstairs, the office would have stayed thirsty, but dry carpets would have survived. Ben twisted the ring tighter; Mira pressed a folded cloth over the leak, hoping to quench the steady drip. Midway, a metal strip caught her boot; knees buckled, shoulders jolted. The bottle swung, slapped a railing, and echoed down the well. Mira’s breath rasped while Ben’s knuckles whitened. A second attempt brought fresh trouble: the cloth slipped, and their rope burned palms. By then her shirt clung, heavy with splashes.
At the landing they paused under a humming vent. Mira wished she had inspected the cap earlier, yet the motion of setting the bottle upright forced concentration on balance, not regret. Together they rolled it across cracked linoleum, pushing until the cooler base nudged their shins. The bottle flipped; foam hissed as air climbed through the column. For one silent beat nothing else moved. Then the cooler’s tap wheezed, but no stream followed. Ben tapped the lid, stared at silent pipes, and let his shoulders sink. Water pooled beneath the silent cooler and glimmered under the ceiling light.
