English 原文
Water rings had darkened the wrapping station’s wooden edge since the morning rush, and small puddles had begun to accumulate under the outdoor buckets. Silas stepped inside, his palm grazing a grainy pot as the door bell gave a quick jingle; his mother lingered near the greeting-card rack, sliding envelopes that rasped like dry leaves. He wanted a cluster of bright orange roses for a class display. Yet the front buckets—a textured tapestry of pinks and yellows—offered no orange at all. The display had been rearranged by the florist, so only trimmed stems remained where the colour once stood. Silas’s shoulders dipped, then he turned toward the storage cooler at the back. Cool air clung to his sleeves when the seal peeled open, and peach-toned roses waited inside. He gathered six; their slippery stems pressed together, and he hurried past the counter before the petals could warm.
At the wrapping station the florist clipped the ends, but arranging fell to Silas. He spaced the flowers like an architect balancing beams, then laid them on fresh tissue; the sheet felt thin after the timer’s mist and tore along a damp crease. He slid another sheet forward. A coil of burnt-orange ribbon bounced lightly against the tiles, then jammed halfway through the spool slit. Tugging only tightened it. Silas reached for a slim bamboo stake that once supported a tall lily and slid the smooth rod through the spool core. With one steady lift the knot loosened, and the ribbon unwound in a quiet spiral. If he chose a brighter ribbon, it would stand out against the pale paper, but the freed length matched his plan, so he tied a brisk bow. Outside, a honeybee traced a slow loop above the outdoor buckets. It dipped to the damp rim, touched the water once, and rose toward the street.
