Another pair of sleeves already brushed the ribbon stand; Ned’s hands tightened and loosened a trial bow while Zara balanced a dripping bouquet against her ribs at the wrapping station. Cool air from the refrigerated display grazed her knees, and the slick stems kept sliding downward. She pressed her elbow closer, lifted the bunch, and tried to measure a length of cream ribbon, yet the spool rolled a finger-width too far, spilling a loose loop across the shears’ chain. A glossy notebook lay open beside the cutting board, its pages filled with cramped lines of quiet wisdom, but Zara’s focus stayed on the erratic tension in the ribbon. She pinched the edge, pulled again, and felt the first knot beginning to form. Around her, buckets rocked gently; tiny tides inside them tapped metal against metal each time a passer-by nudged the shelf.

The bell over the door rang once, then a gray cat skittered across the entrance mats, toppling a clay pot toward the card rack. Zara’s shoulders jerked; she lunged forward, catching the pot before it tipped completely. Soil pressed cold against her forearms as she set the pot upright. The cat slipped between her ankles and disappeared behind potted ferns, leaving damp paw prints on the tiles. When she hurried back, the spray nozzle above the bouquets had completed its timed cycle. Fine moisture glazed every exposed sheet; the top layer of tissue paper now tore along a damp crease with barely any resistance. The bouquet waited on the board, and water droplets marked the wood in a widening pattern.

Zara exhaled, eased the stems back into a nearby bucket to keep their cut ends wet, and crouched until the nozzle’s soft hiss faded. She slid one drier sheet from deep inside the roll, wrapped it first, then knotted her earlier ribbon before lifting the flowers again. The paper crinkled but held. An abundance of bright petals flared above the neat collar, their colours gaining depth against the pale wrap. At the outdoor display, a fresh delivery rattled the drip trays; bees already circled the marigolds, petals dipping slightly under their moving weight.
