Water had glazed the beach like cold glass when Holly pressed a driftwood tip into firm sand three steps inland. Yara knelt alongside her, tracing the outline of a wide spiral they planned to fill with smaller marks before the waves returned. A shallow runnel cut their canvas in half while a heavy plank lay across the channel like a ledge, blocking the curve. Moments earlier, they had tried to drag the plank away, yet the length barely shifted at all. The wood had been soaked through by nights of surf and clung to packed sand under pressure of its own weight. Instead, their effort scratched a groove, and the driftwood stick wobbled wildly; its thin end began to teeter, threatening to snap.

Yara straightened and tapped the stubborn plank with her bare heel, curious whether a side roll might free their path. The board pivoted, knocking a pile of shells that spilled in a cascade across the runnel and into the spiral's lower loops. Some shells skidded beneath the plank and made it teeter farther, offering a glimpse of clear sand on the channel side. If the plank had been lighter, it would have toppled completely, yet its soaked heft now suggested another use. Holly carefully slid her cracked stick beneath one low edge of the plank to gain a bit of leverage. Yara raised the opposite corner, and together they angled the plank into the runnel so its broad surface bridged the gap. Water rushed against the bridge but the soaked timber stayed firm, allowing sand to settle behind it and form a drawing lane.

With the bridge in place, the girls traced the missing arcs, and the spiral closed neatly across the runnel’s mirrored water. When the next wave slipped forward, its foam climbed the plank, rose no higher, then retreated, leaving the design untouched for another minute. The curve had been completed faster than any earlier line because the stubborn plank held the tide back. Holly’s writing stick finally cracked across the middle, separating into two short pieces with a soft snap that made both girls blink. She handed one fragment to Yara, who raised it like a tiny flag as they stepped back to view their shared spiral. Spray beads rolled down Holly’s fragment toward the sand, and grains shaken from Yara’s piece drifted sideways on the rising breeze.
