Thea sat at the far end, her pencil moving across a sketchbook while amber light spilled through leaves above. Eamon stood, crossed the three paces, and poured a careful trickle; some grains bounced, then slid back like tiny marbles. The mound steadied, yet new birds rustled on the tree’s lower branch, waiting for stillness before daring the flight.

A sudden yell broke the quiet. Gravel skidded behind the bench as a jogger veered sideways, ankle twisting. Eamon and Thea hurried over; the jogger waved off help but dropped a small cloth pouch that burst, scattering potpourri and a spicy orange scent across the path.
