English 原文
Under the feeder’s small roof, a pale square of wood showed where no seed dust clung. Dana rose from the mellow, sun-warm bench and lifted the paper bag, testing the light, dry slide of seed inside. Her grandparent sat at the other end with binoculars, silent, the worn strap giving off a faint, waxy smell. Grass breath rose green around the bench, mixed with nut-dust from cracked husks and the resin of the gnarled trunk behind. Far off, a turnpike leaked a tar-bitter scent, thin as heat, drifting over the sweet, strawlike odor of the seat boards. The water dish held cool, stone-clean air above it, and a finger came back with a chilly, mineral hint. "Plenty of company today," the grandparent said, as soft wing-noise brushed the branches and sunflower shells gave off a toasted smell.
Dana poured in a slow, methodical ribbon, guiding it toward the shaded square, and dry kernels pattered with a cereal-plain scent. The first visitors hopped from the tree, snapped shells, and each crack sent up nutty breath, as if small oil vesicles burst. A plump dove settled on the rail; the perch dipped a little, and seeds rolled to one corner like dry sand. When the dove left, the tray leveled, but the small mound remained off-center, and another gust rattled kernels over the edge. Several fell into the grass, spreading a faint breadlike odor; soon, ground-hoppers worked the scatter instead of the platform. A runner passed on the path, citrus-sour drink sloshing, and wings lifted all at once, leaving only the dusty smell of husks.
The bag grew thinner; seed scent rose stronger inside it, and one fold line on the paper showed a faint floury crease. Dana looked from the tray to the ground scatter, measuring distances and corners, her hand hovering over the bag's rolled top. She could spread more on the grass to keep busy feeders away, or cross to the fountain and freshen the warming dish. Instead, she chose one last pour, small and tight, tucked beneath the roof where shade and a lip held scent. She rolled the bag shut, set it back on the bench, and poured no more for the ground. From the tree, a tiny splash of yellow paused on a mid-branch; wings flicked once, testing the air above the tray. On the wooden edge, a husk snapped, hopped sideways, left a thin nut-oil trace, and tapped.
