Wet Clay and Sudden Heat-

English 原文
Eighteen minutes had passed since Jude had pressed the first dimple into the clay, and the wheel still hummed under his palms. Light from the high window struck the spinning column, throwing a revolving shadow band across the splash pan. The half-formed bowl began to teeter whenever the foot pedal caught for an instant, then sprang forward again. A thin ring of slip had been flung in every direction, proof of the sudden burst. With steady consideration, Jude eased the pedal, hoping the speed would stay even. The clay responded, rounding back toward centre, and the wobble shrank. He reached for the wooden rib, but a loud clatter rose from the drying rack behind him.
As a cup rolled toward the floor, he slid from the stool and caught it just before impact. The brief dash left the wheel unattended, and the spinning bowl kept flashing under the hard window light. The kiln-room door then swung wide, releasing a sheet of warm air that drifted across his workstation. The heat met the damp rim; moisture flashed away, and a pale crust formed around the lip. Returning, Jude saw the bright ring already stiff. Tiny fractures traced it like pencil marks, and the shape began another slow teeter. A clump of dried slip clung to the wooden rib with stubborn loyalty, refusing to fall even when he tapped it. If the speed stayed gentle, the altered form might still transform into something useful.
He scooped the sponge through the grey water; sediment stirred and upset a faint reflection of overhead light. Cool drops pattered onto the stiff rim, and thin steam curled upward before vanishing into the brighter air above the wheel. The softened band let him press the ridge inward, turning the flaw into a shallow spiral decorating the bowl. If extra water collected, the wall might slump, so he kept the pace slow and lifted the sponge after each rotation. Shadows slid over his forearms as he kept pressing the damp sponge along the rim while light revolved across the pan.
