English 原文
A striped towel, a metal water bottle, and a green plastic shovel lay on the pale dry sand above the darker writing strip. Waves hissed in rhythmic pulses beyond Hana and Zeke, their breathy rush broken by the sharp caw of circling gulls and the clack of shell chips rolling in the backwash. Mom turned a page on the blanket; the thin paper gave a brief snap. Near the shallow runnel, Hana pressed a smooth driftwood stick into the firm surface, the groove producing a muted scrape as she shaped broad petals for a carnation. Zeke waited beside her, heel grinding quietly against wet grains while the stick was still in use; he planned a maze-like labyrinth for a marble he kept rattling in his pocket. A small splash from the runnel announced a swell that raced along the channel, reminding both children that the tide’s pursuit never paused.
When the petal edge echoed with a final scratch, Hana passed the stick. Zeke’s first line rang out as a crisp drag, but the stick met a hidden knot and split with a dry crack. He hurried toward the driftwood collection point; his footsteps crunched, and the hiss of retreating water filled the pause. By the time he returned with a thicker branch, a louder slurp signaled a stray wave that erased the lower half of Hana’s flower. She knelt again, yet waited while Zeke scored long corridors; the wider tip boomed softly against the sand, leaving walls that stood firm for several breaths. If Zeke had kept the stick longer, the tide would have erased Hana’s stem, so he lifted it after each third stroke, and their alternating rhythm formed a soft duet of scrape and pause. Gratitude showed not through words but through the quick tap of Hana’s knuckles against Zeke’s arm after every exchange, a sound lighter than the gulls’ distant cries. The last groove of the labyrinth hummed shut just as a sweeping hiss covered both drawings in a thin mirror of water. They jogged upslope, and the striped towel that had been crisp now sagged at one corner, darkened where spray had soaked the fringe.
