English 原文
“Under the bench.” A hedgehog shuffled into the honey-colored light beside Tess’s shoes. The gazebo roof caught late-afternoon glow, turning every rail a soft copper. Owen, leaning on the cool plank seat, froze in surprise while gravel clicked under a distant stroller wheel. The creature pushed a splintered twig like a tiny battering ram, yet the gap between wet paving slabs blocked its way toward a dark niche in the stone edging. Tess crouched, the wood smell of the damp seat drifting around her hair. Each facet of the hedgehog’s quills glimmered amber, and its small paws slipped on the smooth slab. Without touching it, she slid a fallen ice-cream stick closer; the hedgehog tested it and edged forward half a body length, then paused as the stick skidded aside.
Only now did Tess gain an appreciation of the real distance. The space measured nearly the width of her outstretched hand; one flimsy stick was never going to span it. She glanced around the gazebo floor and spotted three more bits of dropped timber: a narrow plank that had been left by workers repairing the roof earlier, a bent stirrer, and a strip of cardboard stiffened by dried paint. If the pieces were longer, one would suffice, yet together they might lock in place. She laid the plank first; its end reached only two thirds of the way. Next she slid the stirrer alongside, edges overlapping like puzzle tiles—still a thumb’s width short. Owen raised an eyebrow, silently asking whether to continue; Tess nodded and tucked the cardboard under both, pushing until all three touched the far stone at once.
The little bridge held steady; no creak escaped, only the faint rub of wood against grit. The hedgehog sniffed, then ambled across the joined pieces, each paw landing without slide. At the far side it squeezed into the niche, disappearing with a dry rustle of leaves. Tess exhaled and stepped back, brushing sawdust from her knee while warm shadow edges climbed the gazebo wall. She left the improvised structure where it lay, a tiny walkway shining ochre against the darker paving. A carefree sparrow swooped under the roof and tipped its head; in the next beat, the bird hopped onto the plank and flicked a loose crumb into the air.
