English 原文
Wet sandstone released a metallic tang that reached Maeve’s nose before she stepped from the entrance ledge into the narrow passage, and the smell mixed with faint sweetness rising from a lunch box tucked under her arm—slices of peach, soft cheese, and flatbread arranged in tasteful presentation that a gourmet shop would have praised. A stream of clean, cold water slid over grey pebbles beside her boots, its earthy smell recalling ground stirred by torrential rain far away. Ahead, Briar stood at the concave echo wall, counting the sharp reflections of each handclap. Maeve wanted a softer test: a whispered word that could return in perfect harmony. She had already noticed the wind dying between gusts, so she timed her step onto a dry sandstone shelf, lifted her chin, and released one slow syllable into the quiet.
The curved surface threw her whisper back as a clear duplicate, but her foot had nudged loose grit; the grains rolled downhill, struck the water, and the tiny splashes merged into a steady hiss that reached Briar’s ears first. His shoulders jumped, the count lost. Maeve watched faint disappointment tighten his grip on the marked stick meant for depth readings. At that same moment, a swirl of air from the side ravine spilled through the gap, carrying a dusty scent and pale fern petals scattered across the stream; they drifted downstream like miniature boats and added soft taps where they touched the ledge. Noise layered on noise—Briar’s next handclap blurred inside it.
Maeve shifted approach. She waited during the next gust rather than against it, eyes on the petals as makeshift clocks. When the last one kissed the far rock and the smell of wet stone thickened again, she lifted her free hand in a broad arc. Briar read the silent cue, paused his stick above the water, and kept still while she whispered once more. The canyon stayed hushed, and Briar was raising both palms, preparing a single measured clap.
