English 原文

Moist ridges of old leaf ink gripped Ned’s fingertips when he rested his palm on the craft table. The crisp air sneaking through a high window cooled the wooden surface and made every print feel slightly rubbery. Beyond the drying rack, a wall mural showed a bison herd in mid-charge, paint layered so thick it almost peeled. Beside the table a narrow shelf held three amber pads, their lids half open like clams at low tide. They had been arranged earlier by a volunteer, yet the ink remaining inside each pad looked thin and uneven. Ned pressed a fern against the first pad, lifted, and found only pale veins ghosting across his sheet. He decided to try again, sliding the leaf over a second pad and rocking it slowly to pick up extra dye. Artificial birdsong drifted from hidden speakers, mixing with the quiet slide of chair legs on planks.

The second print showed five clearer ribs, yet large blanks remained, so he rotated the fern and leaned harder on the stem. Still short of a solid image, he glanced at a tiny heating appliance humming under the table. A slow, glistening bead of unused ink tapped softly the floorboards beside its warm vent. He dabbed the back of the fern into the bead, counted ten small presses, and gained a darker tone along the edges. If the third pad also shared a drop, the combined layers could finally cover the faint ghosts beneath. For a moment he hovered, thinking the queue outside might be shorter, but his hands stayed. He squeezed the pad’s corner, coaxing a final bead, then swept the fern across it until the veins glistened. Leaf, paper, and palm met in one firm press; when he lifted, every gap had vanished at once.

A distant buzzer served as a herald; Maeve made a swift leap forward to the sink while Ned checked his sheet. He angled the page toward the window, and the faint tracks he had tried to hide now framed the fern like lace. Ned pressed the last corner of the leaf against the ink pad, and the cushion sagged dry beneath his palm.
