Fern Wall Parted-

English 原文
The gravel on the ridge smelled warm and dusty, but one damp splash beside a birch root carried the sharp tang of fresh clay. Reed crouched, touched the darker smear, and saw it crumble like soft cheese; water, not a boot, had made the mark. A faint earthy ribbon of similar dots curved toward a lower glen where shoulder-high ferns breathed out a cool, moss-rich scent. Hollis, a few paces behind, caught that damp smell and followed as the packed earth gave way to a mat of resinous needles. Somewhere inside the green wall, a weather-worn marker post waited, its symbol lost behind swaying leaves.
The hollow tasted of sliced celery and wet paper. Reed spotted the post, but tight vines had begun to intertwine around its plate, and the ferns leaned over it like giant ladles. To clear a view, he slid a thin cedar stick into the leaves; sweet sap glazed the air. The gap still felt narrow, so he pushed a second, thicker branch at a hinge point where two stems crossed; the resin left a bitter film on his fingertips. Even then the symbol stayed a nebulous blur, so he shoved in a third, heavy limb. The extra weight bent the earlier sticks outward, and the whole tangle collapsed, burying the plate under crushed greenery that steamed with a peppery odor.
Hollis raised an elbow against the sour wave while Reed frowned at the mess. He reached in and yanked the middle stick free; the sharp pull released the strain, and the remaining two sprang into a neat V that framed the metal plate. Loose fern dust drifted up, carrying a faint tea-like scent. Reed scraped lichen away and uncovered an arrow pointing left, not the straight-ahead triangle he had expected. The wet dots from the ridge were only brook water wandering downhill, not footprints at all. Reed wiped the lichen from the plate, and behind him the ferns kept shivering in the light afternoon breeze.
