The newly sanded pine strip should have felt even, yet a hidden ridge grated beneath Rafael’s fingertip like a tiny saw. Before he flicked the speck away, a sparrow burst from the pegboard with a sharp wing-beat that rattled the hanging pliers and left a chain of faint clangs rolling across the studio ceiling. The youth watched the bird tilt in mid-air, glide past the drying shelf, and vanish through the open yard door while the timer on the rack kept ticking in crisp half-seconds.

A soft creak from the shelf pulled him back. His half-glued photo frame had slid forward; one corner hung over the edge. He caught the frame just as a fresh bead of glue threatened to drop. Each facet of the miter joint stayed tight when he eased a clamp around it, but the clamp’s metal jaw thudded against the surface where a zucchini-shaped wooden stamp lay with paint still wet and glossy. The tap sent a hush across the green coat; the surface no longer looked slick—tiny dust grains now dotted it like pepper on snow. If the paint dried with those grains, the stamp would press specks into every print.

Rafael steadied his breath; the timer clicked on. He pushed the frame farther back, accepting a thin line of glue now visible along the seam, and then brushed the loosened sawdust from the stamp with the side of one palm. A few grains stayed embedded, leaving shallow pits, yet the shape remained clear enough for workshop practice prints. A sudden rustle fluttered near the door; the sparrow re-entered, seized a curled shaving, and darted out again. Across the yard, another sparrow dipped under the roof tiles, wings whirring against the gutter. Rafael placed a fresh coil of pale timber shaving beside the doorway.

拉斜放緩呼吸，計時器續敲。他把相框再推進一些，接受接縫上那細細一線可見的膠痕，然後用手側抹去印章上的散屑。仍有幾粒陷入漆裡，留下淺淺凹點，但形狀依舊足夠練習印刷。門邊忽然傳來騷動；那麻雀再度飛入，嘴啣一條卷曲木屑，旋即掠出。院外，同類正貼著屋簷滑翔，翅音拍打水槽。拉斜把一圈新的淡色木屑放到門口旁。
