Sparrow at the Sandpaper Bench-

English 原文
A pale strip of smooth pine ran along one face of the block, while the rest still showed rough blue-grey fibres. A small sparrow settled on the vice jaw, its silver feathers quivering under the overhead light.
Rafferty steadied the block on the pegboard shelf, and Hedy tore away the worn sandpaper, the dry rip cutting the afternoon hush. A tumbler half filled with clear water sat near their elbows; the surface reflected the bird’s outline like chrome. Only one fresh fine-grit strip remained. The packets had been arranged by grit earlier, yet the softer numbers were already gone. Rafferty rolled the surviving strip between his fingers; Hedy angled her head toward it. Neither spoke. Wingbeats followed, a brief ovation of air as the sparrow darted to the mat, pecking a morsel of pine dust that clung there like a single frosted breadcrumb. The adult sweeping shavings outside paused only to push a heap farther from the doorway.
Hedy loosened the vise, shifted the block, and brushed a teaspoon of warm dust into a shallow pile. The sparrow hopped closer at once; its darting beak suggested a kindred spirit busy with its own craft. If Rafferty had claimed the strip alone, the timing of every grit-step would have slipped for Hedy. He folded the paper, offering the corner. She accepted, tore a neat rectangle, and returned the rest. They sanded opposite faces in alternating strokes, both listening to the rasp change pitch. Between passes, Hedy tipped the edge of the board; fresh dust slid onto the mat. The bird gathered the fluff, tucking each threadlike flake under its wing. Past scratches that had worried them minutes earlier grew faint, the surface turning faintly reflective under cool light. Rafferty tapped the block once, releasing a soft pine scent.
