English 原文
Only a thumb’s length of water remained inside the clear misting bottle, and each squeeze drew a thinner sigh. Ada leaned over the desk, ready to revamp the tiny landscape before the last droplets disappeared. The adult, Alden, sat nearby turning pages of a plant-care book, the paper edges brushing together in soft rasps. An open carton held spare gravel under the tray, its corrugated edge brushing the skin of her wrist. Inside the jar, the charcoal layer had been arranged earlier in a neat stripe above the gravel base.
Ada lowered a moss patch with tweezers; its spongy underside pressed down and broke the clean boundary. A gritty thread of soil slipped through the gap, riding on moisture toward the stones like impatient sand. That trickle slowed, yet it gathered more crumbs behind it, showing a quiet determination to widen the passage. As puddles formed, the pebble shifted, and Ada felt cold glass vibrate against her knuckles. The moss’s resilience became clear when its edges sprang upward again, but the soil below continued sliding. Tiny beads marked the accomplishment: a clean curve of earth now followed the jar wall, yet the glass fogged instantly.
A sudden draft swept in when the window behind Alden swung wider, dropping the room temperature and thickening condensation. Within seconds the interior scene was being blurred from Ada’s view, water vapor racing across the cool glass. Instead, she slid the cork coaster halfway under the back edge of the jar, tilting the miniature hillside forward. Gravity drew the surface water toward the front layer of gravel, and the moving line carried loose soil with it. When the flow reached the drainage stones, it thinned, leaving a lighter streak that finally stopped creeping downward. Ada set the pebble upright again; the moss pressed gently around it, no longer drowning beneath runaway water. At the same hour on the kitchen shelf, a glass pitcher cooled, and thin steam curled toward a metal sink. Those pale ribbons drifted across the tiles in soft arcs, thinning as they slipped toward the colder drain.
