Warm foam slid between Gareth’s fingers as he pressed the swollen yellow sponge under the blue-grey water. The sponge rose, twice its dry size, and a heaping handful of suds spilled over his wrist, leaving silver streaks that shone like a heaping handful of sunlight broken into liquid pieces. Crossing the drip path, he squeezed hard; water rushed out, pattering against the tiled wall and running downward in thin, reflective threads. A shallow incision along one sponge edge snagged a grout line, tearing a crumb of foam that clung stubbornly to the surface. While Gareth picked at the fragment, a striped cat watched from the staging area, tail flicking above the pale plastic tray. Sudsy puddles widened, and faint raindrops suddenly rang on the metal roof outside, sharper than the quiet indoor splashes.

Gareth hurried to pull drying towels off a rail before the brief shower soaked them, leaving the basin and target wall unattended. During his short absence, the cat stepped onto the bench; its paw nudged the dense kitchen sponge, which tipped, fell into the rinse bucket, and sent cloudy water over the rim. The spill coursed across the table edge, merged with earlier drips, and curved along a floor groove toward the untouched drying zone. Gareth returned, saw the advancing stream, and slid an empty mixing bowl beneath the lip; the bowl caught most of the flow, halting the cascade before it reached the clean tiles. He had already replaced the scouring sponge, so the only loss was a dull smear of soap on the bench, easy to wipe. His last squeeze directed fresh water back into the now-lower basin, and bubbles regrouped in shimmering rings. From the observer’s perch, the cat stretched forward, paw batted at a lone bubble that floated past its whiskers and drifted toward the doorway.
