Dante slid the coat-hanger hoop into the silver-tinged bucket. The soap level had dropped below the top curve, so one side still gleamed dry steel-grey. He wanted the whole ring hidden under the translucent mix; only then could a single, unbroken film rise. A first plastic cup of clear tap water travelled across the lawn and poured in. The surface climbed one finger-width and sloshed against the rim. Blue-grey ripples carried a faint whisper of foam toward the edge, yet the ring still broke the air. From an open window next door, a distant lecture was being delivered; its flat rhythm blended with the garden’s soft leaf movement.

A second cup arrived. Tiny bubbles drifted out as the added weight pressed old liquid upward, but the gap around the top arc remained. Dante had already used this tactic once today, and his arm cooled in the shady wind-shadow wall while he waited for the foam to settle. He fetched a third cup. When that water met the mixture, the hoop sank completely; in one smooth moment the metal vanished beneath the blue surface, and the threshold finally flipped. He had hoped the slow fill would prove a sustainable approach, conserving soap instead of mixing a new batch.

Now came timing. Suki, seated nearby with a pencil ready, watched the tall grass for movement. Their unspoken strategy was simple: lift only during the stillness between two gusts. She raised two fingers, then folded them as the breeze paused. Dante drew the hoop upward at steady speed. A flawless film stretched across the wide circle and caught the sun; swirling bands of jade, violet, and frost-white slid downward like oil on water. Suki’s pencil moved, but a door thudded somewhere beyond the fence and a tiny vibration travelled through the ground. The rainbow sheet burst without warning, scattering cool droplets across their shoes. Dante exhaled and dipped the hoop again, already planning another try. Behind the bucket, a pale rainbow ring quietly expanded across a fresh puddle of spilled solution.

現在考驗時機。坐在一旁的蘇琪拿著鉛筆，盯著高草觀察風勢。他們默契的作法很簡單：兩陣微風之間才抬起框。她舉起兩指，又在風停時折回。丹特以均速把圓框向上拉。一層完美薄膜覆蓋大圈，接住陽光；碧玉、紫羅蘭和霜白的波紋像油膜般往下滑。蘇琪開始勾畫，然而圍籬外傳來關門聲，細微震動透過地面傳到他們腳下，彩膜猝然破裂，涼滴濺在鞋面。丹特吐氣，再次把框浸入水中，已經盤算下一回合。水桶後方，一圈淡淡的彩虹印跡在新形成的水灘上悄悄擴散。
