The missing piece found, he rasped a soft tire across it; warm, rubbery shavings curled up and released a bittersweet odor that stuck to his fingers. The malachite-green body shell, already removed, shimmered beside a strip of adhesive weights that gave off a sharp metallic tang. Marco’s goal stayed simple: stop the tiny car from wobbling through the uphill climb. He swapped in a high-torque gear set, the teeth already coated with utility grease that smelled like peppery oil, then nudged the car into the start gate. One lap later, the motor’s note sagged and the car slowed halfway up the incline.

Before he could unscrew anything, a sudden scatter of gears rang against the hall floor. Wade’s parts box had fallen, and silver pinions rolled toward the track like peppercorns. Marco stepped away to block them; the overhead lights baked the air until the room felt like a toy-sized incubator, filling his nose with dense, sweet-synthetic fumes. Through the open side door drifted briny wind from the nearby beachfront, mixing sea salt with the rubber haze. By the time every gear was gathered, the track surface had warmed further; the outer rail now gave off a richer, almost caramel scent, and the expansion left a wider gap that no eye had noticed earlier. Marco returned, snapped in a fresh battery, and felt its chemical chill against his palm.

The new battery delivered power, yet the taller gap pushed the car outward on each curve. Marco stuck a narrow weight under the nose; the adhesive released a vinegar-sharp whiff as the strip pressed down. He had already quarantined the hard tires at the table’s edge, keeping their chalk-dry dust away from the softer set, and now he chose them for lower friction on the heated straight. The start signal flashed again, and Marco was reaching for the gate lever when the salty breeze lifted one corner of the malachite shell.
