Two palm-length sticks of white chalk rattled inside a nearly empty box, their dry mineral smell drifting over the tarp. A thin green smear zigzagged across Gwen’s numbered bricks, the lone trace of an earlier test stroke. She lifted a wide brush, the bristles heavy with cool green paint that carried a faint cucumber note, and pressed it against the warm upper row. The brick drank the colour so fast that the edge ballooned beyond the chalk line. She tried lifting and turning the brush, yet the paint kept blooming into the neighbouring square. Inner peace existed only for a heartbeat before the runaway border ruined it.

Gwen left the brush leaning against the wall and moved toward the paint supply tarp. The plasticky sweetness of red and the vinegar-sharp bite of blue mingled in the sun-heated air. Harriet, working two sections away, crouched beside a bucket whose lid had been peeled back; the surface looked like thick soup, and a leathery skin floated on top. The bucket had been placed at the far end earlier, so Gwen fetched a scrap of mesh to strain it. While the paint trickled through, she stirred another pot whose medicinal aroma hinted at drying retarder, then helped mend a foam roller whose handle squeaked; a dab of wet paint worked as makeshift grease. A brief quiet moment fell while both girls compared the salty tang rising from their damp gloves with the dusty chalk scent around their knees. The slow scrape of wooden sticks against bucket walls felt like meditation rather than work.

When Gwen carried the strained bucket back, the sun had crept higher and the shade line hugged her ankles. Harriet stepped aside and, without comment, placed the same wide brush on Gwen’s tray so she could reach a ladder. The smear she had dreaded now looked purposeful: it matched the curve of a sailor’s rolled sleeve sketched in chalk beneath the fresh coat. Gwen angled the brush away from the hot brick, dragged it lightly, and the new stroke stayed narrow. Farther along the wall, Niall lifted a roller that released a sugary paint whiff into the breeze; beside the sailor’s sleeve, Gwen guided a clean green line over the brick.
