English 原文
The upper half of Harris’s grid square looked powder-dry, but the lower bricks still felt damp and cool against his knuckles. He steadied a wide brush loaded with thick green paint and aimed to finish the leaf shape before the sun slid lower. A thin metal linchpin at the ladder station pressed into his shoulder as he leaned past it, its edge cold and smooth. Below, a cloth pouch stuffed with herbs for aroma therapy had fallen from someone’s pocket; the mild scent mixed with plasticky acrylic notes. Harris lifted the brush, yet a run of Lily’s red paint bled through the porous mortar and crept over the vanished chalk boundary. He dabbed at the seep with a wet rag, but the rag’s fibres snagged on rough brick and smeared the red into a wider, slippery stripe. The chalk line had been wiped away by that first stroke, and the rinse jar’s water lost all clarity under swirling colours.
Sunlight struck the wall harder, drying the red edge faster than the green centre and leaving a faint ridge he could feel under a fingertip. Lily asked, “Can you still see the boundary, Harris?” but the roar of a passing bus swallowed most of her words. A stray tabby cat skirted the paint supply tarp, its tail brushing valuable brushes laid out to dry. Harris crouched, tilted his wrist, and noticed the red stripe remained wet and sticky—an unwanted blot, yet also a ready-made line. Without changing tools, he pressed the broad side of the same brush flat and dragged the wet red inward, letting the tacky paint act like a soft ruler. The property that had spoiled the edge now anchored a crisp border around the leaf; green filled the space inside with no further drift. As he straightened, a drop from the heavy rag slipped onto the loose corner of the tarp, the damp cloth glued itself flat, and the wind-flapped edge finally stayed quiet.
