A stray tabby cat skirted the paint supply tarp, its tail brushing valuable brushes laid out to dry. Harris crouched, tilted his wrist, and noticed the red stripe remained wet and sticky—an unwanted blot, yet also a ready-made line. Without changing tools, he pressed the broad side of the same brush flat and dragged the wet red inward, letting the tacky paint act like a soft ruler. The property that had spoiled the edge now anchored a crisp border around the leaf; green filled the space inside with no further drift. As he straightened, a drop from the heavy rag slipped onto the loose corner of the tarp, the damp cloth glued itself flat, and the wind-flapped edge finally stayed quiet.
