Most lanterns over the reflection pond shone a cool silver, but a single pale shape fluttered beside them. A large moth, no wider than a coin yet carrying delicate wings like frosted glass, clung to the wire of Hazel’s fish-shaped lantern as she and Suki stepped onto the narrow edge stones.

A few minutes later, fading daylight turned the pond surface into a steel-grey mirror, and the girls finally noticed the moth’s grip had bent the lantern’s thin frame. Carrying the lantern now felt like a responsibility; if the frame broke, the fish would droop and its LED might slide free. Hazel raised the dowel first, heels lifting, but the insect remained just above her reach. The coarse stone underfoot allowed only a brief stretch before she wobbled back. She tried again, shifting one hand higher on the dowel—same method, steadier balance—yet the height still defeated her. Suki took her place, climbed one flared root, and lifted the lantern with both arms. That extra handspan placed the moth in clearer view, and the surprise emerged: not one insect but twin moths overlapped, the lower one trapped in a smear of half-dried paste from earlier work. The pasted wings looked in urgent care of rescue; Suki tilted the lantern until the paste loosened, and the lower moth slid free, drifting toward a branch overhead. She had past perfect experience straightening bent wire at home, so she pressed the frame inward until the fish shape evened out and its glow spread evenly again. Hazel nodded, her breath showing in the cool air as if matching the pond’s faint mist. Suki tightened the delicate wire loop on her lantern while a small ring of ripples widened across the shadowed water nearby.
