Steam and the Last Pinwheel-

English 原文
The ribbon coil at the packaging station scratched like dry bark when Niall expected silky smoothness under his thumb. Amber lights glowed above the station, turning the cardboard boxes caramel brown. They also caught an iridescent shimmer on the glaze of apricot pinwheels displayed behind glass. Niall had planned to carry three pinwheels home, one for each neighbour, and the tray behind the counter still looked generous. His parent lingered near the specials board by the entrance, reading prices while the queue inched forward over flour-dusted floor markings. A faint hiss escaped the kitchen pass-through. Steam drifted across the display, only to evaporate before reaching the chilly breath of the drink cooler. The timer above the oven showed eight minutes until the next batch. Niall relaxed his shoulders; eight minutes felt wider than a weekend afternoon. He even gave the empty toothpick cup beside the sample plate a playful toss up, catching it before it rolled.
Five shoppers arrived together, and the bell above the entrance kept jingling like a tiny spring wound too tight. Each newcomer pointed at the apricot tray, and the staff member worked the tongs in a steady rhythm. Pastries slid, boxes folded, ribbons squeaked; the bright stock thinned faster than steam could evaporate from the glass. By the time Niall reached the counter, only one pinwheel remained, its iridescent glaze cracked slightly at the edge. He had planned to share three, yet the shrinking tray offered a clean arithmetic: take one or leave with none. Niall glanced toward the oven timer, now down to two glowing digits, and accepted the smaller goal without a sigh.
The staff slid the last pinwheel into a box. The corner tried to spring open until she pressed an extra crease for resolution. Niall lifted the warm package, feeling dough aroma rise through the thin cardboard like honey through cloth. Warm air from the floor vent slipped through the bench slats, lifting the pastry's aroma. Outside, he sat beside the sun-warmed bench table, and a single shard of glaze gleamed on the lid.
