English 原文
Someone had stacked the project boards by the corridor window an hour earlier, and Lyle now nudged them aside with his shoulder. The science display for the upcoming autumnal equinox still lacked the small sapling meant to stand inside a hollow log on the table. Their teacher had given each pair a strict quota: three handfuls of soil just moist enough to hug the roots without dripping. The supply closet floor offered only dry potting mix, so Lyle balanced a paper cup of it on his palm and hurried back to the desk. A stray tabby cat, regular visitor from the playground fence, stretched on the sill and flicked its tail, appearing to revel in the mild indoor breeze. Lyle set an iced bottle from his lunch against the cup, waited, and shook out the first thin ribbon of meltwater. The soil darkened in spots yet crumbled apart when he pressed it—still too dusty.
He tried again after five more minutes. The ice had thinned, and warmer classroom air coaxed a trickle that hissed against the grains and vanished. Condensation spread over the bottle’s steel-grey surface; droplets gathered, released, and pattered onto the corridor’s polished floor. Cool beads rolled toward the notice cart where Hana was arranging papers about tree ancestry. One wheel crossed the wet patch, flung a spray of mist, and then squeaked down the tiles. Lyle slid a spare worksheet under the drip to slow the growing path of water; the thin sheet soaked fast, halting the glide.
Only a thumb-sized shard of ice remained inside the bottle. Lyle tilted it, counted three, and the last clear drops fell together. They merged with earlier gains, and the soil at once clumped, holding the wooden stick upright like a tiny flagpole. If the bell rang now, the quota would stand complete. He lowered the sapling, pressed the new root ball into the hollow log, and brushed stray grains away. The cat leaped down, nosed the damp rim, and padded off toward the open door. The very last drop slid from the bottle, landing on the soil, and the mixture finally held its shape. Beside the desk, the emptied bottle spun slowly toward the recycling bin’s rim.
