The Crack That Held the Colour-

English 原文
A row of small paint cups already lined the mixing bench, and Emmet’s sleeve brushed one while he nudged his stick into the silver-lit liquid. Holly aimed to place a wide lavender disc on the tray as the first background colour, yet the paint refused to fall. Its viscous body clung to the thin stick; even a firm tap only drew a trembling thread that snapped mid-air and vanished. She added a spoonful of water, but the sudden change in density turned the mixture almost transparent, so the circle would print as a ghost. Holly had tried three blends already, and pale swirls drifted uselessly on the rinse basin like driftwood left after rain.
Outside, a distant cloudburst began drumming on the workshop roof, sending faint vibrations through the steel-grey supports above the trays. At the same moment, a hairline fissure opened along the rim of the lavender cup where Emmet had brushed it, and a bead of the thicker, original mixture bulged outward. Holly caught the droplet with her stick before it fell. The crack exposed untouched paint that kept its heavy body, and she finally recognised that weight as an ally: a compact disc would stay firm while later colours compressed around it. She set the loaded stick just above the blue-grey surface and let gravity drop the dense bead. It landed with a soft plop, spread only slightly, and anchored the growing pattern. Emmet steadied the comb while she drew slow arcs; the stout lavender centre held every curve in place.
They rolled the alum-damp sheet across the water together, his hands guiding the near edge, hers smoothing the far side. When the paper lifted, tight spirals radiated from the solid core and lighter rings shimmered toward the borders. A cool draught carried roof-drip scent across the room as they hung the sheet on the drying rack. From the open doorway, the marbled rectangle seemed no larger than a postage stamp pinned among long rows of fluttering prints.
