English 原文
The carpet gave slightly under Kane’s knees where a clear streak of ooze formed a sticky oval beside the reading table. A row of faint paw-shaped dots led from the mark toward a thin metal shelf delineator that separated two stacks of picture books.
Kane brushed his palms together and slid a curling call-number slip flat against the polished wood. A gentle stream from the ceiling vent lifted one edge again, so he added a thin magazine as a weight. The slip still arched. He reached for a bulky atlas and balanced it on top; his shoulders tightened as the extra mass pressed down, yet the lamp base tilted. A large photography volume followed, piling higher until the whole column wobbled like a slow metronome. Kane had to negotiate the narrow space between the moving pile and a tortoiseshell cat that had jumped onto the chair arm. He tried to persuade the cat to shift by nudging a pencil, but the animal only flicked its tail.
The stack swayed once more. Kane gripped the atlas’s spine and pulled it free in one quick motion. The remaining two books dropped lower, the slip stayed flat, and the lamp stood steady. If he had stopped after the second volume, the slip would have stayed hidden beneath the lamp much sooner. The cat sniffed the atlas now on the floor, leaving a fresh wet print that smelled faintly of citrus; Kane realised the earlier ooze had likely come from a leaking hand-sanitiser bottle the cat had explored near the entrance. Human and cat seemed to reach a consensus: the table was tidy, and the warm chair remained free. Kane wiped the mark, flexed his stiff fingers, and walked toward the checkout desk.
Hours later, quiet hung across the darkened library. The lamp’s circle of light showed the magazine and photo book lying flat, while a dry citrus ring faintly rimmed the chair leg. A librarian rolled the morning cart against the table leg.
