English 原文
A hollow tok rippled along the bamboo grove, followed by a sharp tap and a soft descending whoosh. Troy paused on the fallen culm bridge, hoping for a clear note that matched the pattern Ruby marked in her notebook. A cool hush lay between the trunks; distant leaves rattled like dry paper above their heads. Somewhere deeper, a beetle scraped bark, its tiny rhythm lost under the larger knocks drifting nearby through the tall stems. They had packed twelve thin orange ribbons earlier that morning to tag each successful strike along the trunk. When the wind rose, dozens of culms clattered together, weaving a haunting melody that swallowed Troy’s single taps. He tried counting heartbeats between gusts, yet each lull ended early, leaving his timing tangled inside the shifting framework of sound. After four attempts, only eight ribbons fluttered against the green surface, and Ruby’s pencil hovered without confidence over the page.
A stronger gust slowly faded, revealing a low groan; the culm had rolled slightly on two knotty root stubs above the ditch. Troy slid off, picked up a twisted bamboo branch, and wedged it firmly between trunk and gravel to still the movement. The branch scraped with a gritty hiss that rolled outward like dry sand softly sliding down a tin roof. He tapped again; this time the bridge answered with one clear, deep ring that echoed under the canopy before sinking into hush. The tone gave Troy instant insight into where the hollow space widened, and his shoulders loosened while he tied another ribbon there. Yet a thin whistle rose from a crack near the root, shifting the note again and showing the grove kept its tempo. Back at Ruby’s bag, five orange ribbons remained, their unused ends rattling softly against the light metal zipper in the rising breeze.
