Petra shifted the wicker rim until its shadow touched the stone basin where spring water waited in still sunlight. The water shone amber under the glare, and a light breeze traced narrow ripples across the flat surface. They planned to rinse three full loads before their next stroll to the drying frames beyond the pink evaporation ponds. Salt clung in bright sheets inside the basket, and each pinch Amos rubbed between fingers squeaked like dry snow. Nearby, Unity knelt with a marked stick, comparing grain sizes collected from the shallow and deep sides of a pan. Behind them, an open-walled warehouse held neat rows of empty baskets stacked beneath a thatched roof waiting their turn. A tour group moved along the outer path in quiet leisure, their pale hats bobbing against the wide ochre clay.

The first rinse rolled milky clouds from the crystals, turning the clear basin into swirling honey after only one slow dip. Amos raised the basket to drain, yet the water beneath already looked opaque; two more loads would darken it beyond use. The spring valve could refresh the basin, but the trickle was slow and the sun edged toward a thin wandering cloud. Petra bent over the rim, spotting a curved oyster shell lodged among coarse grains, its rough edge catching light like pale porcelain. Removing the shard left a finger-sized hollow where brine had pooled earlier and hinted that deeper layers remained heavier. They exchanged a brief nod and revised the plan, deciding to wash only the fine crystals resting on the basket’s upper half. Petra skimmed the lighter grains with the rake head, while Amos swished them gently through the basin’s remaining clear depth. He spread the rinsed salt thinly across a frame, and a bright stripe appeared beside untouched wood like morning frost. A drifting cloud slid above the pink pond, and faint shade crept across the field while tiny crystals kept glittering.
