Excess Clay, Quiet Wheel-

English 原文
The tallest slot in the ceramic tool jar showed only a pale ring of dried clay. The trimming loop was gone. Mabel leaned closer, turning the jar to check every angle, and the handles rattled softly against one another. She reached for the wooden rib instead; its edge felt gritty, but at least it was there. A half-formed platter spun on the wheel centre beside her knee, grey surface glinting under the cool window light. The slow motor hummed, and droplets traced silver arcs across the splash pan. Without the loop, finishing the foot would demand extra care, yet the apprentice artisan kept her breathing even and her posture mindful.
She sprinkled a thin ribbon of water onto the spinning clay, hoping the moisture would erase tiny ridges around the base. The surface darkened, so she added another splash; the coating turned almost mirror-smooth, but the rim began to sag outward. Wanting extra support, Mabel pressed the wooden rib against the edge and dragged fresh slip toward the centre, thickening the wall like a shallow dam. Still dissatisfied, she scooped a coil from the prep board and pressed it onto the underside, giving the platter a heavier skirt. Each new layer felt useful for a moment, yet the added mass upset the earlier synergy between wheel and hands, and the form started wobbling like a slow drum.
The wobble widened with every turn, sending faint vibrations through the foot pedal and into her heel. Mabel paused the wheel, lifted the heavy coil she had just attached, and peeled it away in one clean tug. A dull clap marked its landing in the splash pan. With the excess clay gone, she restarted the motor at a cautious pace; if she kept the speed steady, the platter would stay calm. She skated the rib over the base once more, letting water carry the last crumbs toward the rim. The shape no longer shook, yet the surface still showed room for refinement, so she simply thinned one corner and left the faint groove as a guide. Mabel lifted the wire cutter away, its fine line dripping grey slip onto the pan.
