Chalk Broke, Ribbon Held-

English 原文
A bright metallic ping danced along the corrugated roof as Drake pushed the roll-up door halfway skyward. The shed greeted him like an everyday drum, each footstep echoing twice before fading behind the float frame. He knew that hollow rhythm well, yet the pitch now rose slightly higher, as if the roof sheets tightened. Janet scraped a wooden stirrer against a paste bucket, the slow rasp merging with the ping in an odd duet. Drake knelt at the chalk planning area where last week he had mapped the blue-and-gold border in steady lines. Today those lines lay blurred, rubbed by ladder legs and streaked by a dried crescent of paste near the centre.
He pulled a stub of chalk from his pocket, but the first stroke made only a faint scratch on concrete. Footfalls thudded past, shaking loose pale chalk dust long before the mark could widen enough to guide anyone. He tried again, yet the stub snapped with a crisp crack that vanished beneath the rolling staple gun bursts. He stepped back and saw the two tissue panels overhead fail to meet; the seam wavered where colours touched. If he had kept relying on chalk alone, the border would have vanished under the next splash of wet paste. Instead, he uncoiled a bright ribbon from the supply table, slid a spare buckle through one end, and planned a sturdier guide.
Janet paused her stirring long enough to pass him a small hammer, whose muted taps fixed the buckle flush against the floor. Drake stretched the ribbon across the chalk zone, the nylon edge humming like a low string each time it brushed the concrete. Where the ribbon touched the float trailer’s wheel, he lifted it, looped it through a ladder rung, and tightened the line again. The new border stood straight, and the mismatched tissue panels now bent easily to its quiet, unwavering path. A fragrant gust from the fresh-flower corner drifted over, mixing rose sweetness with the faint plastic smell of ribbon. Only four chalk pieces remained in the tin, their tips already flattened by earlier tries.
