The Jar at the Edge of the Shelf-

English 原文
Three pale water rings had dried on the reception counter beside a copper clip, the oval metal still warm from earlier use. Grant stepped closer and spotted a squat plastic jar resting on the edge of the product display shelf, its glossy surface blushing like fresh strawberry pulp beneath the amber bulbs. Inside the mirror wall, copper strands on a mannequin head reflected back, and the warm lights appeared to empower their colour until every highlight deepened. A stylist across the aisle had just whipped up foamy dye in a ceramic bowl, hurried toward the crowded basins, and left her wheeled trolley parked across the narrow walkway. Grant lifted the jar but found the trolley blocking a straight route to the waiting seats; he chose to slip sideways between hanging capes, the nylon brushing his elbows while clipped price tags fluttered against his shoulders.
Curiosity guided him to a vacant chair, yet the cape around his neck pulled tight, refusing to let his arms stretch far enough to twist the jar’s lid. He loosened the neck toggle with one hand, gained room, and tried again; the stiff seal would not budge. Warm moisture still clung to the towel on his shoulders, so he wrapped the damp corner around the lid, turned firmly, and the softened plastic surrendered with a muted pop. Under the lid a thick mask shimmered; the vanity bulbs seemed to empower each copper fleck until the mixture reached a glowing saturation. Grant had expected something sweet, yet an earthy, herbal scent rose instead, proving the jar carried treatment rather than dessert. Dale flipped a magazine nearby and murmured, “Vivid stuff,” while pages slid under his fingers. The ceiling fan slowed into an even beat, stirring loose clippings in unhurried circles above the floor. Grant set the reopened jar back on the shelf and steadied the stylist’s ceramic bowl against its stand.
