English 原文
A faint metallic tang drifted up from the iron-red sand as Quinn lifted its dish toward the stick patterning bench. The warm table still showed its old scratches, yet the room now held a sharper hiss from distant pouring. He planned to lengthen a green feather down to the early tan layer resting halfway up the bottle. The green portion had been measured into a small dish by the facilitator before the session began. Harriet, standing beside him, counted nine layers to the neck, but his notebook listed eight. Relying on her count, he poured the remaining green, yet the thin stream finished early and left a gap. He tapped the funnel rim to mimic rain, shaking the grains into a wider sheet, but the layer still stopped short.
That shortfall meant the stick would strike empty glass unless another colour covered the gap. A second obstacle emerged—purely physical. The fine green came from recycled glass, once coloured by photosynthesis in distant leaves. The coarse brown portion rattled inside its receptacle, heavy and slow enough to blanket the space without slipping between finer grains. He tipped the dish carefully; the tumbling grains landed with a patter, then avalanched, filling the hollow while Harriet kept silent count. Now the bottle carried ten layers, a mature tower whose lower bands already pressed thinner under weight.
Quinn pushed a thin stick through the neck, and a long hush replaced every earlier hiss as sand parted around wood. Halfway down, resistance thickened, so he chose a wider stick and drove it once, producing a deep rustle. Green and brown slid after the wood, forming feathery streaks that seemed to imitate river reeds swaying under wind. Through the curved glass, the feather looked thick on the near face and thin on the far, a distortion unnoticed before. Quinn steadied the bottle while Harriet held the receptacle that still cradled a spoonful of mixed green-brown dust. Side by side, they raised both objects toward the window, colours in one and loose grains in the other catching late light.
