He traced the vibration to a paddle partly blocked by clay, the clog turning the chamber into a tilted ecosystem of eddies. A short stick floated near the dog; each bump against the wall clicked like a metronome, marking the uneven rise. Fraser eased the stick toward the slot, and the loose clay broke away with a soft clunk. Water now roared evenly, the spaniel’s tail whipping against the balance beam with a quick thud-thud. He backed along the towpath, footprints packing the earlier quagmire into a narrow, firm edge. Behind him, leaves skittered across that freshly solid strip and stopped against the settled earth, resting.
