Clay Loosened Under the Rush-

English 原文
The mooring rope groaned, deeper than before, and Fraser halted beside the bollard with his springer spaniel. “Did the bollard move?” he asked, though only the dog’s tilted ears answered. The rope rubbed the iron cap again; each scrape rose sharp, then dropped into a woody thud that echoed along the stone wall. Wind hissed under the balance beam, and a far-off paddle clacked against its socket. Fraser expected the usual even roar of water filling the chamber, yet only one side rushed; the opposite wall offered a muffled gurgle behind the opaque swirl. A visiting researcher jotted notes near the upper gate, pen tapping a slow rhythm on a clipboard, but Fraser kept listening. His boot pressed the towpath’s rim, and the soggy ground squelched like a small drum. The spaniel sniffed the green band of algae; droplets slid from her whiskers and pattered on the ladder rungs.
The rushing tone stayed lopsided, and the boat inside began a faint creak toward the louder side. Fraser knelt, hand on the slick stone, following the changing pitch until his palm met a chill draft escaping a lower gap. Inertia kept the heavy timber still, yet the gate shivered whenever a swirl slapped its face. He traced the vibration to a paddle partly blocked by clay, the clog turning the chamber into a tilted ecosystem of eddies. A short stick floated near the dog; each bump against the wall clicked like a metronome, marking the uneven rise. Fraser eased the stick toward the slot, and the loose clay broke away with a soft clunk. Water now roared evenly, the spaniel’s tail whipping against the balance beam with a quick thud-thud. He backed along the towpath, footprints packing the earlier quagmire into a narrow, firm edge. Behind him, leaves skittered across that freshly solid strip and stopped against the settled earth, resting.
