Cool mud touches Lars's toes. He steps beside the stream. Water hums around smooth pebbles. The light is soft here. A round boot print stays wet. Tiny bubbles sit in it. Lars walks past a mossy tree. Wet claw marks cross the bark. Fine soil clings around them. The grown-up calls, "Hello, Lars." Near the fallen log, water drips. Each drop leaves a wet circle. All three marks share wet shine. A family of ants park sweet crumbs. A neat fold lines the leaf. He reaches for a flat rock. Wet moss makes the rock slick. He steadies his foot on a root. The rock stays firm under him. Lars turns and walks downstream. A water strider skims out of sight.
