A sweet paint smell fills the classroom. Clara steps on the soft carpet. Grey light washes the desks. The teacher says, "Good morning, Clara." Clara walks toward the tall window. A paper square drifts before her foot. She pauses and lifts her shoe. The square settles under a desk.

Near that desk, she spots a trace. A wet oval ring circles a stain. Clara moves past a clean paint table. A fresh wet stroke shines on paper. She reaches the cold glass pane. Rainwater slides, making a tiny valley. One dark hair rests on the sill. The pane makes a gentle creak. Raindrops tap the window.
