The Batter Jug’s Second Swirl-

English 原文
The steel hook beside the burner showed only a pale outline of flour dust where a folded cloth once hung. Oren tapped the bare metal, then lifted the ceramic batter jug and poured onto the seasoned pan. The hiss sounded higher than he remembered, and the film set too quickly; when he tilted the pan, a thick ridge caught the flow. The circle rippled, its edge beginning to unravel like yarn. He tried easing the handle, yet the batter pooled in the centre, branding the crêpe with an uneven amber pattern shaped almost like a bent quill. With a quick slide of a spatula, he moved the heavy disc to the cooling rack and frowned at the wasted batter.
Seren stood a few steps away, chalking the layer tally on a small slate each time a cooling crêpe joined the row. Meanwhile, Oren wiped the offset spatula, rinsed the marble slab, and checked the pastry cream. The bowl had been kept cold by a towel that had been frozen earlier, and its surface shone like pale honey. He spread cream over two successful crêpes, then pressed them into alignment on the stacking board. A warm glow from the hanging lamp washed over the marble, turning the wooden spoon handles a soft caramel tone. He adjusted the wire rack so the first crêpe would not slide, then loosened the gas flame for Seren’s count. Not once did he look back at the jug; his hands busied themselves with cloths, bowls, and the gentle weight of cooling layers.
When Seren brushed past, the jug bumped against Oren’s elbow and settled on the counter in front of him. Without thinking, he gripped its narrow handle higher, the way he had held the spatula a moment earlier. The batter poured in a finer thread; the pan swirl finished before the film set, leaving a perfect golden disc. Flipped onto the rack, its speckled surface revealed a tiny seahorse traced by darker spots that he had never noticed in earlier batches. The thick reject crêpe, now resting under the bowl, soaked stray droplets of cream and left the marble slab gleaming as he reached for the next ladle.
