English 原文
A pale crêpe was already gliding from Bea’s spatula onto the cooling rack when Jude reached the cream station. Silver light from the skylight reflected on the chilled marble, and the marble surface had been kept cold by a hidden towel. Jude’s goal was simple: tailor each swipe of pastry cream so twenty flawless layers rose, one atop another. He moved to dispose of a torn practice crêpe in the compost bowl, but his elbow brushed the rack. The sixth crêpe skidded, tapped the next disc, and the pair slid like thin blue-grey coins toward the jug of batter. Hot edges had worried a narrow groove into Jude’s wooden spatula, yet he still managed to wedge its flat blade under the leading crêpe, halting the small procession a finger’s width before the jug.
The jug rocked anyway, sending a bead of batter onto the marble; the droplet cooled at once, leaving a translucent patch that behaved like morning dew. Bea grabbed a folded cloth and pressed it beneath the rack’s front feet, adding weight so no further movement reached the cream bowl. Jude gave the jug a cautious tweak, making sure it sat level again. If the jug had fallen, batter would have flooded the cream and blurred every layer. Instead, he tailored his next spread with lighter strokes, trusting the cloth wedge to act as stop-loss while he worked. The marble warmed gradually, so Jude adjusted by rotating bowls, keeping cream near the slab’s cooler edge. After the twentieth layer, the cake stood upright, faint ridges catching the steel-grey light.
Hours later, when the kitchen lamps clicked off automatically, the counter lay quiet beneath a pale glow from the street. The dome covering the finished cake mirrored bluish shadows, and a single bead of condensed dew descended along the inner glass toward the plate.
