Splicing the String on the Tin-Can Telephone-

English 原文
"String's too rough here." Nestor tapped the can rim. The hollow metal answered with a sharp ping that faded into a softer ring. Across the hedge, Ivan raised his matching can; the lift sent a tremor racing through the cotton that hissed in Nestor’s ear like sand on foil. Earlier, the string had carried every whisper, but wind now pressed twigs against it, adding off-beat clicks that buried the words. Nestor set the can on a sun-warmed stone, lifted the wicker basket, and unrolled the spare coil. The spool, left from yesterday’s craft workshop, still smelled of chalky glue; most of the roll had been used during the workshop, yet its outer layer looked thick. Each loop slipped free with a papery swish, reminding him of kindling sliding inside a stove. He had planned to replace the entire fifteen-pace line; a quick recollection of the morning count confirmed the distance, and the child-safe scissors clicked like beetle jaws while he measured.
Sunlight flashed along the taut cotton, and a warm resin scent leaked from clipped twigs, while distant rooks beat the air with slow wings. Nestor tugged harder; the spool spun once, then stopped with a dull thud—its cardboard core already showing. Only seven paces of new string remained. A restless gust bent the dandelions and forced another rasping strain along the old cotton, producing a fluttering rattle against the short supply. He trimmed the fresh piece anyway, deciding to splice only the damaged section near the hidden burr instead of replacing everything. Snip, wrap, press—cloth tape sealed the joint, leaving a tiny ridge. Nestor lifted the can, turned it a quarter-turn, and began to narrate his test in a low murmur. Vibrations travelled cleanly; a steady thrum from Ivan arrived untouched by wind. A sudden pop of tension settling inside the branch finished the repair, and the two cans brushed softly while grasshoppers kept buzzing.
