When the Sandpaper Strip Fell from the Pegboard-

English 原文
The medium-grit sandpaper strip felt almost slick against Tamsin’s thumb, though fresh paper usually offered a dry bite. Afternoon glare sliced beneath the patio roof and struck the vice station where a pine block waited. A tabby cat dozed nearby, its flank ticking as bands of light slid across the floor. Tamsin clamped the block, drew the strip forward, and heard the rasp falter. A cloudy ring spread across the surface. The foam backing on her sanding block pressed harder at one corner, carving an unwanted pattern. She tilted the tool, tried once more, and produced another uneven scratch. With a short sigh, she hooked the strip back on the pegboard and stepped away, leaving the hurdle unsolved.
Tamsin moved to the dust-clearing area and swept the bench with a soft brush, guiding sawdust into a tin tray. The brush had been cleaned earlier, yet fine grains still clung to its bristles. The damp cloth beside the tray had started to evaporate moisture into the air. She folded its cooler side outward and wiped again, keeping the metal surface clear. Sian, an adult finishing a tabletop farther along the patio, loosened a jar lid; a nutty scent of linseed oil drifted over. “Lid's loose,” she noted, twisting the metal top until it clicked. The cat stretched, wandered under the pegboard, then slipped into shade beyond the roof. Finished with cleaning, Tamsin lifted her pine block and carried it to the touch-test shelf. Pressed against the reference piece, the block rocked slightly, revealing a thin gap along one edge. She compared the faces by running knuckles across both, then set the work aside on the drying rack.
A flutter of cardboard ticked behind her; the breeze had jostled the pegboard, knocking the same medium-grit strip loose. It skidded across the mat and came to rest against Tamsin’s shoe. She stooped, noticed the compressed corner of the foam, and pinched the opposite end between two fingers. She reclamped the block, this time aligning the grain under the brighter lamp. Short, even strokes followed, lighter at the near edge so pressure stayed flat. The rasp settled into a murmur and the rings thinned until they almost evaporated. Held beneath the beam, one pale crescent remained, a regret mark that would merit a finer sheet later. Warmth tingled across Tamsin’s fingertips as she slipped the strip back onto its hook.
