A hidden pink stain flared under the wet paint, transforming both colours toward turquoise; their shared nod signalled understanding. He tried to relate that shift to the tree leaves outside and guessed the two flawed portions might balance each other.

They poured the teal into the chartreuse, palms steady, shoulders aligned to prevent a wobble. Volume climbed, the meniscus trembled, and then, with one final swirl of a clean stick, the paints fused; the mixture flashed into an emerald mass that reached the rim in a single, smooth crest. The threshold clicked. Halle slid the tray to the shaded end of the table and dabbed a square on the test strip. The sample dried lighter, matching the cardboard foliage exactly. Rafe straightened, letting tension drain from his spine, and laid the stick in the stirring zone. He stepped back from the table. In the rinse jar, cloudy water kept rotating in a slow circle, its dull swirls catching the kitchen light.
