When a Feather Fell: How Two Pickers Saved Their Apples-

English 原文
Only five apples remained on the sun side of the branch; earlier clusters had already filled baskets nearby. Mae balanced on the lowest rung, the silver-grey ladder steady while rough bark brushed her sleeve when the branch drifted forward. High above, a thin cloud stretched like a lone wolf crossing the pale sky, unnoticed by the busy pickers below. As she reached, the limb swayed back, leaving the ripe pair of apples just beyond her fingertips again. An orchard worker had nurtured the trees through spring storms, so each apple now felt dense and perfectly grown. Emil waited beside the trunk, arms ready to steady the basket, whose woven rim had been pressed into the grass. They tried to synchronize their movements: Mae tugged the branch downward while Emil lifted the basket, hoping for a clean drop. The branch flexed, slipped through Mae’s palm, and the two bright apples swung back overhead with quiet defiance.
Mae climbed down, grabbed a wooden fruit-hook, then climbed again and slipped its curved tip around the limb. Emil pressed the ladder foot into firm soil and said, “This spot feels firm; the frame stays steady now.” Together they pulled slowly, keeping tension smooth, and the hook guided the branch lower without the sudden rebound. Just as Mae twisted the first stem free, an eagle glided across the canopy, shadows sliding over leaves like moving water. A feather drifted from its wing, spiralled among blue-grey leaves, and settled on the distant sorting table. Startled by the flash overhead, Mae’s grip loosened; one apple slipped, bounced on grass, yet the second landed in Emil’s basket. From the gate, the sorting table looked postcard-small, while the fallen apple still filled Mae’s palm. A breeze rolled past, rocking distant branches into short grey waves, yet the apple’s skin stayed still against her fingers.
