English 原文
The rope looped around the nearest bollard snapped taut without warning; Beckett paused and craned his neck toward the lock chamber. Inside the uneven water, the narrowboat tipped a finger’s width toward the towpath, as if one side lifted quicker than the other. He trudged to the upper gate, boots sinking slightly into the damp earth, and pushed the balance beam with both shoulders braced. The oak refused to budge, held solid by pressure still building behind it, so his first guess pointed toward the paddle valves. The right paddle had been tested before breakfast, yet its chain now clicked differently below the beam. He unclipped the brass windlass shaped like a tiny seahorse from his belt and fitted it onto the left-hand socket. A cold film coated the handle, grit pressing through his gloves while he cranked until the iron rod reached full height.
Water surged from the left paddle with the usual hollow roar, yet the boat still leaned and the rope moaned. Beckett hunched over the railing; eddies on the right drifted lazily while those on the left whipped spirals of foam. The sluggish side revealed a blocked interior slot, probably packed with clay silt from last night’s rain. He kept the chamber rising by letting the free paddle roar; the uneven torrent hauled the stern sideways, stretching the hemp. Fibres scraped on iron, texture like bristles over stone, and Clara glanced up from her drifting leaves at the sound. "That rope's complaining," she called, stepping back from the splash. Beckett bent his knees, reversed the windlass two turns, and the flow softened, though the level would now climb painfully slowly. A zesty twang of orange peel escaped his pouch while he waited, and introspection shared the towpath with creaking rope.
After another slow rise, ripples reached the algae mark, and the balance beam finally shifted without the earlier resistance. Water inside and outside now matched, so the heavy gate eased open, its hinges shuddering but continuing a steady arc. The narrowboat glided forward, stern rope slack enough to flick harmlessly against the stone instead of scraping. Yet a subtle list remained, proof that one paddle still breathed harder than the other beneath the green surface. Beckett shrugged the windlass back on his belt and wiped grit away from his gloves with short, firm strokes. Four orange wedges waited at the bottom of the pouch.
