English 原文
Every morning before sunlight touched the upper almonds, Janet followed the narrow channel to check the wooden gates. Today, the light bouncing from the water lacked its usual quick sparkle, as if one facet of the day stayed unpolished. Hardly had she stepped onto the moss-dark stone when the tone of the current lowered, a muted brass note beneath the common whisper. She paused, palm hovering over the first iron handle, listening for the familiar second splash that never arrived. The dry path behind her held two footprints instead of the clustered pattern she expected, and the space beside the channel felt wider.
Near the bend, the sluice gate stood half open; its swollen planks showed a thin, sun-bleached streak where a hand once rubbed daily. Were the ballast stone still wedged against that gate, the surface would offer a steady silver thread instead of restless swirls. She lifted the handle; the wood groaned, and the water answered with a resonant rumble rolling through the narrow chamber beneath the bridge slab. Nothing rose to soften the surge, so droplets leapt farther downstream, darkening soil that was meant to stay dry for another hour.
She crouched, drew a versatile utensil from her cloth pouch—a flattened spoon bent at right angles—and slid its edge under a cluster of leaves snagged on the gate. The debris peeled away with a gasp, revealing a shallow recess in the stone; behind it opened a small chamber, cool and dusky, walls glistening like fish scales. She leaned closer, then shifted back; her shoulders tilted, and a short breath escaped while she studied whether the missing weight once sealed it. For a moment her hand hovered, tool halfway between pouch and water, and she studied the ripples folding light over the glossy interior. No decision arrived, so she pressed the spoon’s bowl against the gate again, nudging it a finger’s breadth—just enough to settle the flow.
By the time the altered stream threaded toward the distant fields, mist had lifted, and the channel glowed amber where sunlight slipped between mulberry branches. A farmer at the far bend straightened, called, “Morning,” and raised a hand; Janet lifted hers in return, yet her gait slowed rather than quickened. What gripped her attention was the empty patch of earth beside the path, a neat rectangle of pressed dust where something broad once rested. She stopped before the next iron handle, water cold against her ankle through the stone, and rested fingertips on the metal without pulling. Light glinted along the narrow gap between plank and post, waiting while her fingers stayed still.
