English 原文

“Who shifted the sluice rod?” Quinn’s voice carried over the irrigation channel, the words skimming the surface where sunlight normally ran straight. His boots damp, he paced the familiar stone edge, counting the iron studs that once aligned with his own notches. Today, however, one stubborn stud glinted at a point roughly four fingers higher than its neighbors. Seldom had the water spoken so softly; most afternoons it slapped the retaining walls in brisk pulses. Now it moved in deliberate looping circles across the stones, as though conserving every glimmer of borrowed momentum. A resentful squeak escaped when he nudged the wooden lever, hinting at sand caught between hinge and post. Lush greenery draped the opposite bank, heavier than last week, its vines dipping far enough to brush the current and collect stray leaves. Those small changes slowly layered into a puzzle he could not yet clearly name.

Quinn crouched, letting his fingers glide beneath the surface until they touched pebbles rattling in slow oscillation. It was the narrow side sluice that caught his focus; only a thread of water slipped through, whereas memory placed a bright ribbon there. As though the gate were glass, he examined reflections, noticing bark crumbs bobbing in a tiny procession. He traced them upstream, past moss-dark stones, to a spot where someone had chosen to interject a flat shard of slate between two boards. The improvised wedge now forced a long, gracious arc in the otherwise direct flow. The slate held firm, content to stay wedged, and in doing so had redirected strength toward the main trench, leaving the smaller channel almost idle. Quinn straightened, shoulders rolling, and for a breath he neither adjusted the slate nor walked away.

He reached for the slate, paused midway, then shifted instead toward the dense vine curtain. When parted, the hanging stems revealed a side basin he once believed decorative; algae rings marked a higher watermark than the one glimmering now. A trickle pulsed through a crack at its base, enough to keep the basin alive but no longer overflowing. Water stains around the rim looked old, and flies hovered lazily above the still patch in the center. Quinn stepped back, letting the vines swing shut, and lowered the main gate half a turn, sending a push toward the hidden bowl. Soon, his footsteps receded along the gravel embankment, mixing with the channel’s renewed chatter. The iron lever then settled with a hollow clunk, and a row of droplets trembled along its darkened arm. Under the fading light, the slate stayed wedged, water bending around its edge in steady, circling swirls.
